Battle hots up for Ajax star

Tottenham and Arsenal are set to battle it out for the services of Ajax defender Joel Veltman once he returns from the World Cup.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is on the look out for a new central defender, as is Gunners chief Arsene Wenger as doubts surround the future of Thomas Vermaelen.

The Belgium star looks to be heading to Manchester United, and if that is the case then Wenger will need a replacement. The same applies to Spurs as Michael Dawson is also expected to leave White Hart Lane.

22-year-old Veltman is currently with the Dutch squad at the World Cup in Brazil and will be there for at least another week after they booked their place in the semi-finals.

Veltman did not play as Holland defeated Costa Rica on penalties to set up a showdown with Argentina, but he did come on against Spain in the opening game.

However it is the player's form at club that has attracted Arsenal and Tottenham, with both clubs expected to make bids once he return from Brazil.
